How can we Help Young Adults Excel Through Summer Programs?

Summer is a time that virtually every child looks forward to all year long. While some individuals may view summer as an opportunity to lay around the house and sleep until noon every day others see a wealth of potential in allowing a child to grow through experiencing new adventures. Helping a child achieve personal excellence through participating in summer programs for high school students allows them to get ahead in life by learning something about themselves and developing their skills. These benefits will help them as they grow older and find themselves making decisions about their career choices as well as many of life’s other challenges.

There are many different types of summer programs for high school students that are available. Many of these programs are specific to a given location. Parents who live in the area may wish to have their child participate in these programs or they may make the decision to send their children to programs in different areas of the country. It is safe to say that there is a program available for virtually every interest. There are also both short-term and long-term programs available which allows students to take advantage of a variety of different activities.

Career Exploration

For example, individuals who are interested in participating in a summer program that involves researching marine mammals will have to travel to an area that offers such programs if they live in areas away from the water. This too proves to be a valuable experience because it allows students the chance to see if they can realistically expect to be happy working in a given profession as well as living in a different geographic location.

How to Study for the LSAT

LSAT Study Schedule

How much should you study? The easy answer is “every chance you get without burning yourself out”. But, as we know, you have school, work, maybe a family, church stuff, volunteer stuff – other items that take up your time and attention. So, here’s one possible LSAT study schedule that you may want to try.

• 60 Minutes before work or school
• 60 Minutes during lunch
• 60 Minutes before bed

Now, this is for “study” – as in studying each LSAT section or the sections you are struggling on. Taking practice LSAT tests are a different story and don’t necessarily fall into the schedule I propose above.

In general, if you have to ask “how much should I study for the LSAT?” – the answer maybe that because you are even asking that question, you may not want it bad enough.

Study as much as you can, but be smart about it.

Letters are Variables

Ignore the games’ topic and instead focus on relationships between the letters.

Easily and Quickly Categorize

Quickly place logic games into main categories:

• linear/sequencing
• grouping (in-and-out/matching)
• combinations of the two main types.

Diagram Efficiently

Remember economy of motion and thought here: Symbolize the game’s variables and rules with minimal writing.

Create minimum # of diagrams

Combine rules early in the game to eliminate some possible scenarios. If you created a diagram previously, reuse it to avoid making new ones.

Be Smart with Time

Be judicious on whether it’s worth spending more time on main diagram or on questions.

Don’t Worry Too Much and Enjoy the Games

May the odds be ever in your favor – that’s right. Have fun with it. As you learn to enjoy the logic games, you’ll find that you will do better.

Logical Reasoning

The LSAT Logical Reasoning section aims to test your mastery of well formed sentences, proof, assumptions, and also basic logic. Here’s an example of what you might see. This example is from Alice in Wonderland – yes, there’s some interesting argument and methods of inquiry in that movie:

“[Y]ou should say what you mean,’ the March Hare went on.
‘I do,’ Alice hastily replied; ‘at least — at least I mean what I say — that’s the same thing, you know.’
‘Not the same thing a bit!’ said the Hatter. ‘You might just as well say that “I see what I eat” is the same thing as “I eat what I see”!’

Are you sufficiently confused? Okay, let’s deconstruct the conversation.

• Mistaken Reversal: “x then y” versus “y then x” in “I see what I eat” versus “I eat what I see”
• If/then Structure: “If I say it, then I mean it”

What is the LSAT

The LSAT is a half-day, standardized test administered four times each year at designated testing centers throughout the world. The test is an integral part of the law school admission process in the United States, Canada, and a growing number of other countries. It provides a standard measure of acquired reading and verbal reasoning skills that law schools can use as one of several factors in assessing applicants.

The test consists of five 35-minute sections of multiple-choice questions. Four of the five sections contribute to the test taker’s score. These sections include one reading comprehension section, one analytical reasoning section, and two logical reasoning sections. The unscored section, commonly referred to as the variable section, typically is used to pretest new test questions or to preequate new test forms. The placement of this section in the LSAT will vary. The score scale for the LSAT is 120 to 180. A 35-minute writing sample is administered at the end of the test. The writing sample is not scored by LSAC, but copies are sent to all law schools to which you apply.

The LSAT is designed to measure skills that are considered essential for success in law school: the reading and comprehension of complex texts with accuracy and insight; the organization and management of information and the ability to draw reasonable inferences from it; the ability to think critically; and the analysis and evaluation of the reasoning and arguments of others.

 When Should I Take the LSAT?

You should take the LSAT as early as possible before law school application deadlines. In recent years, many law schools have requested that applicants take the test by December for admission in the following fall’s entering class. If you think you may want to repeat the test after getting your initial score, plan to take the LSAT first in either June or October.

How Should I Prepare for the LSAT?

The LSAT measures skills and knowledge that develop over a period of time. Thus, you cannot prepare for the test by making a last-minute effort to master specific subject areas. However, persons who have thoroughly familiarized themselves with test directions and questions types, who have practiced on available sample tests, and who have studied information available on test-taking techniques and strategies, may feel more secure on the day of the test. This post is the first of a series I’m calling: Subject by City. What I mean is that I’m going to highlight tutors that teach a specific subject in a city. Make sense? Okay, here we go.

A Quick Observation

So, I’ve noticed that there is quite a bit of inbound traffic from people looking for tutors that homeschool in the New Orleans area. I have a hypothesis. From what I know, and I could be totally wrong, New Orleans doesn’t have the best public school in the state. If that’s true, then I’d imagine a large number of parents wish to homeschool their children because they might feel that by doing so their children could receive a better education than from the public school system.

Here’s what I think is interesting. Again, Google, through their search prowess, is describing a social phenomenon. They can predict I believe accurately which states are more likely to homeschool their children based on search data.

How cool is that!

What are the basic needs of children? And, why should we care as they relate to education and in succeeding in school, or in need of an elementary math private tutor (random subject, I know)?

I’m not an expert parent. Not even close. I am experienced, however. Being a parent of 9 children has made me age and mature faster than normal. I pretty much look like I’m 90 years old, but I’m mid 30’s.

What I’m trying to say is that I have gained some wisdom along the way, and that’s what I’d like to share with all of you parents today, keeping in mind, of course, that while I’m speaking to you, this lesson is also for me.

Again, I’m not an expert parent – none of us are – but I am a parent that has had some experience and one that is happy to enter into a dialogue with other parents so that we can learn from each other.

So, here we go.

Basic Needs of Children

My experience tells me that when these needs are met, it leads to an emotionally healthy child. Knowing these critical needs are important because they can serve as a guide during those difficult moments we all have as parents; it can serve as a roadmap to guide our actions.

In subsequent articles, I’ll highlight each of these critical needs that children have and how we, as parents, can better and more intentionally meet the needs of our children.

This is important, especially as we seek to help our children become successful in school. If we do not meet these basic needs, our efforts on the school front will be influenced negatively.

So, stay tuned to learn about each of the critical needs that our children have and how each one will help them be successful in school – elementary, middle school, and in college and beyond. Heck, forget school – meeting these needs will help them succeed in life, and that’s what it’s really all about.

Here’s a little bit of news to folks in New York interested or are planning on taking the GED Test in New York – She Be Gone!

Yup, the GED Test will be replaced by an exam that will be developed by McGraw-Hill, who will create their own version of the High School Equivalency Exam.

I guess in January, the state of New York won’t offer a free version of the GED Test. Instead, New York will offer a test called Test Assessing Secondary Completion, or, TASC, for short. It’s a test developed by McGraw-Hill. If you ask me, I think the acronym GED is much cooler than TASC.

TASC, SHMASK. That’s what I say.

In terms of content, the test will appear the same and will cover GED Reading, Language Arts, Math, Science, and GED History topics. And, the test will last up to 7 hours. Awesome.

I suppose what motivated the New York State was increasing costs. For the state of New York, it costs $6 Million to administer the GED Test. Representatives from the state of New York claim that the new version of the GED will cost less.

Just a little info for New Yorkers that were trying to figure out how to pass a GED or its equivalent exam this year!
